We coach a variety of businesses in a lot of different industries. Over the years we have observed some businesses grow and then slowly fail, and businesses that have plodded along, growing slowly, have done ok. On the other hand, many businesses have grown dynamically and are very successful. Each have used a variety of marketing methods and strategies.
The one common thread we see is the following: “We don’t market or advertise, we rely on referrals, because of costs.” Now don’t get me wrong, referrals are great tools to grow a business. Over time a consistent referral system helps build a reliable business foundation.
As part of our digging deeper approach, let me ask you this question? if you have a new business or want to grow your business, how will using the referral method help you reach prospective clients or customers in a short period of time?
A referral system is part of a total marketing plan, but sadly for many small to mid-size businesses that is their only marketing plan.
What would happen if your business used additional resources to effectively tell your product or business story? Assuming you use the right mix of storytelling venues, what would happen? Your business would grow and even scale up in size a lot faster.
Telling your story and including client “testimonials” is a powerful way to build a business. When used correctly this is a gold mine. Let customer testimonies shout out your story, their story about your business. Be prepared for the growth. Will you be ready, or can you handle the increased business? Another digging deeper discussion for a later time.
Do a review of your marketing or advertising and consider newer paths to get to that “ideal client or customer.” Web sites, emailing, texting, and branding can lead to new dynamics in your business growth.
Marketing or advertising is an investment in your business. But like any investment, follow-up on the results must be done from time to time.
Remember, referrals are great! Every business needs to consider methods to increase their number which will lead to significant increase of clients or customers... that’s what marketing and advertising can do.
Target the right people, with the right message... you can hit the ball out of the park.
